The first
quarter chapter meeting for the AWI Georgia Chapter was held on January 19,
2006 at the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Karl Brohammer,
the director of the laboratory, hosted 28 members of the chapter and gave a
discussion on the purpose of laboratory. The lab teaches students at the
school of architecture along with providing training to woodworkers from
around the industry.
The guest
speaker for the meeting was Chris Vaden from Skills USA. He was joined by
local officers Ashley Hopkins and Telia Rivers.
The non-profit
organization teaches leadership and provides networking opportunities for
motivated high school students involved in vocational training such as
cabinetmaking.
State and
national competition are held each year to demonstrate the skills of the
students. Companies such as Bosch Power Tools and Harley-Davidson hire
students directly from the competition.
The AWI Georgia Chapter will be examining ways the chapter can get involved
including our time and money.
Skills USA is an excellent proving ground for future woodworkers. They have
the skills and motivation to become an immediate asset for your company.
