Financial Report
Treasurer Hugh Patrick reported the chapter's balance.

Membership Report
Discussion of membership. Several firms provided payments after mailed statements. Some firms dropped membership due to economic circumstances. Updated contact information needed from membership.

Web Site Report
Encourage member firms to take advantage of free member benefit to promote their member firms, and prepare articles for monthly publications and rotations on web site. Articles to be approximately 300 words, 1 to 3 photos. Review web site expenses. Encourage April 16 meeting attendees to prepare and submit articles discussing their member firms.

Old Business

  • June meeting: June 18, 2010, Guest: Robert Stout, AWI National Rep (NC Chapter). Location TBD.
  • Wood Solutions One Day Presentations: May 25-Valdosta, GA; May 26-Columbus, GA; May 27-Atlanta (GA, NC and FL chapters to participate). Speakers Bureau opportunities assignments for speakers; modules to be selected See Wood Solutions web site for details. AWI National is sponsoring and underwriting fee for 5 events. Bruce Robb confirmed with Teresa McCain of GA chapter speakers participation. A coordination meeting is scheduled with speakers and back up speakers with subject matter at April 16 meeting.
  • Southeast Wood Solutions Fair: GA Chapter staff booth, allowed distribution of 2010 AWI Standards, attendance in excess of 325 per Wood Solutions staff. NC meeting, Charlotte in excess of 200 attendees.
  • Comments related to the Speakers Bureau: Excellent means of GA Chapter AWI exposure, propose attendance in 20-30 participants per Woodworks, locations, brown bag lunches, little to no cost to chapter and or participants. Brown bag version format or sponsored lunch preferred plan of action.
  • Promotional materials in process per National and provided to the chapter: GA AWI chapter now has 5 trained speakers (Greg Kasten, Jeff Elzemeyer, Jere McCorkle, John Lunday, Eric Naustal) as 4 GA Chapter AWI attendees to the Florida training session. Meeting on April 16 to choose the modules for presentations, allow use of existing cadre of speakers thus developing expertise. Bruce Robb following up with Teresa McCain.
  • Annual Coordination and Outreach: CSI Contact for presentations: John Lunday, to contact CSI for interaction and communication to promote AWI, 2010 AWI Standards, Wood Solutions activities relevant to promoting AWI objectives. First Monday each month meeting for Atlanta Chapter at Perimeter Holiday Inn / Ashford.

New Business

  • AWI Leadership Meeting: event planned for May 13 - 15, 2010 at Hyatt Regency, Louisville, KY. Jeff Elzemeyer, Development Council Representative for AWI Georgia Chapter to attend. See AWI National web site for info.
  • AWI Georgia Chapter receives Distinguished Chapter for second year in a row: attention to details, reports, web site updates, membership retention and updates for Chapter management and chapter member participation in activities have lead to the award. The award is to be presented during the Louisville agenda.
  • Contact follow-up National Members across Georgia: how to excite and encourage members across the state to participate? Bruce Robb would like to follow up in this contact role to promote a major program on annual basis.

Old Business

  • Golf Outing: Committee to review options for May 2010 tournament.
  • Website Updates: Member Benefit to appear on Chapter Website; BOD to contact members to encourage participation.
  • Carolinas Chapter join meeting: John Lunday has expressed interest to Carolinas' Chapter in participation, but not yet able to build a group for visit.
  • AWS AWI Speakers Bureau Meeting: Program by AWI National to teach presentation methods and delivery of subject matter planned for March 26-27, 2010, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. BOD recommends Chapter participation by members and BOD member.
  • GT Wood Expo (9/11/2009): Reflected great ideas and presentations; however, attendance was directly affected by construction market. At time of the September, 2009 conference, over 60% of local (Atlanta area) architects were unemployed or directly impacted business slow down as word on the street. Sponsor advised the conference was break even.

New Business

  • Sponsorhips & Scholarships: Should the BOD revive sponsorships for students in VoTech and high school programs thru programs such as SKILLS-USA? BOD to investigate.
  • Exhibits, trade fairs: Investigate local outlets and venues for Chapter presence. What is the ROI for participation and anticipated cost?
  • GA Chapter Staffing for Southeast Wood Solutions Fair: event planned for February 16, 2010, 8:00am to 5:00pm at Cobb Galleria. Staffing to be coordinated with AWI National. Jere and Bruce to contact Teresa McCain to determine blocks for GA Chapter staffing of booth.

Meeting Highlights: Carolina Chapter Meeting March 4-5: Carolina Chapter president Kristine Cox has extended an invitation to the Georgia Chapter to participate in its March 4-5 event at High Point, NC. Tentative tours include: Herzog Veneers, Adams Wood Products, Hafele America, Velspar or Worth. Georgia Chapter BOD will follow-up with online member survey, a more complete agenda, and estimated cost. Tour of Tennessee Log and Timber Homes invitation for a GA Chapter Spring tour: Chairman Robb announced invitation as a possible Spring or later 2010 event. BOD will post information on chapter website. Fall 2009 Golf Outing: deferred to proposed May 2010. Event postponed due to economic conditions. May event would likely be planned for Marietta area. Additional details to be posted on chapter website. AWS: the chapter has copies of the new standards available to our members. Members are advised to visit the chapter website for instructions on how to obtain a copy. Website / Profiles: Hugh Patrick reported on the updates to the Chapter's website, to include COMPANY PROFILES. Profiles are archived and posted periodically on a first come first serve basis. Profiles include services, products and may include photos. The BOD enacted this activity to encourage both local and national referrals for business. Meeting Highlights: Georgia Tech Wood Expo: Karl Brohammer reported following benchmarks: mill tour of six plants included 28 participants, opening reception and presentation by John C. Robertson, VP Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, had 125 attendees; other expo highlights: 35 exhibits, GA Tech Global Learning Center documented 116 architects participating in events leading to CEU credits, the keynote luncheon hosted approximately 125 attendees. The program established a basis for follow-up conferences in the future. Golf Outing: plans are being made for the Spring AWI GA Chapter Golf Tournament, to be scheduled on a Friday somewhere near Marietta (as a central location to the Metro area). Carolina Chapter Joint Meeting: the chapter's participation in the joint meeting with the Carolina Chapter scheduled for Spring 2010 at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville has been postponed until a later date. AWS: the chapter has copies of the new standards available to our members. Members are advised to visit the chapter website for instructions on how to obtain a copy. Meeting Highlights: Georgia Tech Wood Expo: Karl Brohammer reported nearly all exhibit sponsorships have been sold and program is being finalized. Members in Focus: added new membership benefit features company profiles of individual chapter members. Hugh Patrick advised several companies have submitted their information. Golf Outing: arrangements have been finalized for the Fall AWI GA Chapter Golf Tournament. Carolina Chapter Joint Meeting: John Lundy is coordinating arrangements with the Carolinas Chapter - Asheville, NC Spring 2010 meeting. Meeting Highlights: Expression of thanks to Peach State Lumber Products for hosting the event and meal. Karl Brohammer presented short overview of upcoming Georgia Tech Design, Materials, and Methods of Wood Construction Conference and Expo (Sept. 9-11, 2009). Chapter business: Financial Reports by Hugh Patrick, Treasurer, Membership certificates and recognition of new members. Chapter website recognized as efficient tool for communication. Cody Matherne presented AWI National report of the importance of the 2009 Revised AWI Quality Standards - and importance of membership becoming experts of same. Chairman Robb reported the Georgia Chapter AWI Summer meeting topic will address "Elements of a Propert Set of Specifications for Bidding Projects". Chairman Robb inquired of members for their input regarding topics for future events. Dan Cox presented an overview of Peach State Lumber Products' operations, and explained FSC Certified materials are becoming increasingly important, as well as LEAN operations. Spencer Lutz, president of Banks Hardwoods, Inc., presented "FSC - Chain of Custody Certification. How to get your company in the chain". Close of meeting with a group tour of Peach State Lumber Products' facility.

Meeting Highlights: Winter business meeting, BBQ luncheon, and facilities tour hosted by the Georgia Tech Advanced Wood Products Laboratory. Teresa McCain, AWI National, previewed the upcoming release of the 2009 AWI Quality Standards, training modules and the AWI areas of emphasis, including the Speakers Bureau and AWS format.

Presentation: "The Big 'If' in Pay-If-Paid Clauses" by Attorney Michael P. Davis, of law firm Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Martin.

John Lunday will present the AWS overview that he was going to present at our last meeting.

Jeff Elzemeyer will discuss the items the Development Council is working on.

Update on AWI National.

Lunch will be provided.

Any non-AWI members are welcome for a fee of $25.00

As always we will have Copies of the new AWS standards for any member that would like one.

Affilliate memberships will also be available for $25.00 which get you a copy of the new standards and a 1 year membership to all Georgia Chapter AWI functions.
